PROJECT NARRATIVE
Nom is a response to a pressing issue within student culture: food waste, eating isolation, and convenience barriers around healthy eating. Emerging from a survey of 81 students, three core insights emerged - 60% of students waste food weekly, 83% cook better meals with others, and 86% eat unhealthily when stressed. Rather than accepting these as separate problems, Nom was conceived as an integrated solution addressing all three simultaneously. Developed as part of a university group project responding to the Creative Conscience awards brief, the solution needed to feel accessible, playful, and rooted in genuine student experience.

The brand personality is Organised Chaos - a concept that encapsulates student life and kitchens, and informed the visual identity. The name Nom is an onomatopoeia grounding the concept in the act of eating and enjoyment (rather than obligation). The visual identity draws from familiarity and nostalgia: fridge letter magnets inspire the logo's playful, versatile quality, with the 'o' deliberately offset to capture imperfect arrangement. The core deliverable - the app - functions as a digital fridge inventory with social features - users log purchases, see friends' fridges, receive expiry reminders, and discover local food deals. Illustrations created from tactile paper cutouts bring an imperfect, student-made quality to the interface, while photography documenting real student kitchens reinforces authenticity and reality. Every element reinforces that eating well is about connection, intention, enjoyment.
